The importance of wearing SPF every day has been ingrained in us since childhood. From SPF-infused moisturizers to sweat-proof sunblocks, there are many ways to protect our skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays.
However, not all sun protection is created equal. Although you can guess that the higher the SPF, the better the protection, it is not always.
For all the SPF 100s you’ve stockpiled sun-intelligent readers? Not only is this a waste of money, it can also be dangerous.
The higher the SPF, the better, right?
According to EWG, the answer is no. First, the SPF (Sun Protection Factor) describes how well sunscreen protects against UVB rays. Check your bottle for a “wide spectrum” to make sure you’re both protected from UVB. And UVA rays.
And it turns out, there’s only a marginal difference in the high label. For example, SPF 50 protects against 98 percent UV rays, while SPF 100 protects against 99 percent. This single percentage, presented as double SPF, gives users a false sense of security (emphasizing falsehood).
EWG adds that because of this sense of security, many users choose to apply SPF 100 inappropriately, choosing not to reapply all day because of their “enhanced protection”. Moreover, SPF 100 sunscreen often has a high concentration of chemicals.
The company concludes that SPF-rated sunscreens between 30 and 50 provide adequate protection even for sensitive skin. Here are some of my favorite SPF 50 sunscreens. If used properly (read: reapplied every 60-80 minutes), these sunblocks protect the skin from burns, UV damage and sun-related skin diseases.
1. Australian Gold Botanical Sunscreen Natural Spray SPF 50
One of my favorite SPF 50 sunscreens is Botanical Natural Sunscreen Spray in Australian Gold. The formula is rich in antioxidants and is gentle on the skin and still strong enough to block UVA and UVB rays.
Thanks to the delicate scent of beach citrus oasis, you can wear this sunscreen anytime and anywhere. You will get a light and fresh smell instead of the smell like coming back from the pool.
2. LTMD UV Sport Sunscreen Lotion
When I knew I would be particularly active outside, I opted for a water-resistant sunscreen like LTMD’s UV Sport Sunscreen Lotion. Whether I ride a bike, hike, swim or even do outdoor window shopping, I know this sweat-proof sunblock will keep me covered.
EltaMD’s sunscreen lotion is not visible or wiped off with the first bead of sweat. And since it’s scent-free, you don’t have to worry about a fun mix of BO and collar while enjoying your outdoor activities.
3. Hawaiian Tropic SPF 50 Broad Spectrum Sunscreen
The Hawaiian Tropic SPF 50 sunscreen also deserves a place on my go-to sunblock list. I like this particular block because of how easy it is to find it at local drug stores. So I never have to worry about forgetting my sunscreen when I’m out of town.
This reef-friendly, cruelty-free sunscreen is an explosion of the past. The smell of the iconic coconut took me back to my childhood (when I was caring sarcastically) Way Less about sun protection).
