I come from a long line of talented seamstresses. As a child, I was always amazed that my relatives could create so many beautiful, elaborate clothes, blankets, decorations, and more. As an adult, that wonder has been infiltrated by a sense of guilt.

When I realized that, at my age, my mother was sewing her whole dress from scratch. Meanwhile, I can’t unlock the mystery that is a bobbin. But with my schedule, learning a new, tedious skill is not an effective option.

Moreover, many textile artists in my family have already passed. Those who are still alive are either equally busy or physically unable to show me the ropes. Just when I committed suicide without being able to carry on their legacy, I found DMC.

“From a simple thread, a work of art is born”

DMC first started selling printed fabrics in 1746, 270 years ago. Since then, the company has expanded to include threads, yarns, knitting accessories, craft kits and free patterns. The company’s motto completely wraps up its policy: From a simple thread, a work of art is born.

Although I’m not completely optimistic about embroidery and knitting, I can’t say the same for sewing and crocheting. So, when I noticed that there were several crochet kits available at DMC, I was hooked (for pun intended).

My grandmother could crochet a 1970s Chevron Afghan that seemed like a day or less. I know there is a need Bit I practiced more before I reached his level, I started with DMC’s Mandala Coasters Crochet Kit.

DIY led by DMC

My crochet kit includes everything you need for my project: four adorable balls of baby cotton yarn, a crochet hook, a sewing needle, a sewing marker and of course, detailed instructions. I was nervous but determined not to be overwhelmed by a kit that claims to be new.

Fortunately, the instructions were very thorough. It broke every stitch I needed to make Mandala coasters — even the first step, a slip knot, which many craft kits would ignore because of its supposed simplicity.

Does not add extra fluff to DMC’s instructions, they are easy to follow and conveniently located on two side pages. (So, I don’t have to worry about holding my uncomfortable crochet in one hand and flipping the pages in the other.)

The overall project should take about 12 hours to complete, which I have been dropping at 30- to 60-minute intervals throughout the week. I’m not going to lie and say I’m not disappointed in one or two knots, but it’s certainly no more frustrating than a disturbing Facebook feed at 10:30 p.m.

And in general, my DMC kit has provided much more than a new skill.

Adding to this new activity has given me more rest, no less

Before I started my project, I assumed that I had practically No. My schedule room movement. Then, I thought about my deep night Netflix and scroll routine. On Saturday nights, I go to bed at about 11 a.m., and I’ll watch a show (and / or scroll through my phone) until I fall asleep at midnight or one.

I decided that incorporating my DMC kit into my bedtime routine was my best option. The kit is compact enough to fit my slender bedside table, making it even easier to reach at the end of the day. One of the first things I noticed was how quickly I fell asleep.

Okay, so that probably sounds bad at first. But I think it’s safe to assume that Crochet isn’t going to win an award for the most entrepreneurial activity anytime soon. And since I wasn’t taking my eyes off the harsh blue light or my brain to the anxiety-provoking media, I could decompress and fall asleep faster.

Did I wake up a few times with crochet needles in my collarbone? Yes. Am I starting to feel more relaxed, alert and calm in the morning after crocheting instead of staying up to the doom-scroll? Also yes.

Even more benefits of DMC

In addition to soothing my tired brain and eyes, working on a DMC kit has been a huge confidence booster. I got so caught up in my work, home, repetition that I forgot the addictive thrill of learning a new skill or hobby (and getting better).

My mandala is coming along the coaster Too much Slowly but steadily, too. As I turn every corner and close every new coaster, I am proud of myself for doing something productive in my limited leisure time. But I am also happy to learn such a skill in my family from generation to generation.

With this relaxed rustic punch needle kit and this dreamy cool wall hanging macram kit I have already set my sights for the upcoming DMC projects that I want to try. This kind of piece I will buy on Etsy for myself or a loved one.

In fact, DMC My Gift Game is sorted out just in time for birthdays, anniversaries and other holidays. For my colleagues and members of the artistic family, I plan to gift them my own DMC kit to try. I can’t wait to use my newfound skills to create one-of-a-kind gifts and decorations for everyone else.

And while I’m still nowhere near the skill level of my mom, grandma and sisters, I’m excited to be close to sewing by sewing.
