You’re probably misusing your can opener — here’s the best way

I (Ahem) was a year old when I learned the right way to use a can opener. Many of us put the blade of the can opener on the top of the can, holding the opener vertically, twisting it around and removing the top. But that tip always falls into the now-open can and you keep trying to dig it out with a knife or other pot or even try sacrificing your fingers on the sharp end of the top.

In the video, Eignemann places the opener horizontally on top of the can with the blade on the outside of the can, clamping to the side of the can instead of inside the lid. Rotate the opener clockwise around the can.

“Voila!” Ignatius says in his video. “Instead of peeling off the top and potentially cutting yourself off, you’ll have a nice clean cut that will attach to your can opener.”

It took a few attempts for me, but I finally got the hang of it. There are no sharp edges on the lid and no digging in tomato sauce or bean juice to get the lid out. And, the can does not rotate as much as using the opener in another (wrong) way.

One fan responded to Eignemann’s TikTok: “That’s the decent thing to do, and it should end there. My great grandmother was a lunch woman and she taught me that. That’s why there’s a magnet. “
